Volvo Trucks: Cyclist/Pedestrian Safety and Side Guards

Volvo Truck’s research has discovered that while fatalities are decreasing with heavy goods vehicles the same cannot be said when involving pedestrians and cyclists. There are many steps that need to be taken when reducing fatalities of the most vulnerable road users from technology to safety awareness. The fact still remains that most fatalities involving pedestrians and cyclists occur with a side impact collision.

The results of their research state that 40% of fatalities occur with a side impact collision. From their findings they produced 4 ways to protect the most vulnerable road user. 1. Better street design. 2. Road safety awareness  3. New technology including Side Guards and 4. More Visibility.
