Walker Blocker Side Guards in Philly and Other Safety Enhancements
The Philadelphia Streets Department announced that every new trash compactor it purchases will be upgraded with four 360-view, day- and night-vision cameras, side guards and enlarged side mirrors. The side guards in the photo are Walker Blocker side guards.
The new safety upgrades come from the 2017 Vision Zero Initiative and 3 Year Plan which also includes making the city’s fleet of 6000 vehicles safer in an effort to reduce traffic deaths.
Philadelphia has one of the highest rates of traffic-related deaths, compared to our peer cities. And every year about 10,000 traffic crashes occur on our streets, killing about 100 people and severely injuring 250.
“So, while requiring side guards on public city vehicles is good, Philadelphia should, like New York City, set a deadline for all private vehicles doing business in the city, to install side guards on their vehicles,” reads a recent post on BCGP’s website.
